New AGSA officers

Hello Everyone,
I would like to officially announce the new AGSA officers for the upcoming school year. The job of fundraising will be decided at the beginning of the school year. Thanks everyone who voted and congratulations to our new AGSA officers for 2009-2010:

President: Carla Pezzia
Vice President: Lori Barkwell-Love
Secretary: Rebecca Edgin
Treasurer: Michelle Vryn
Workshop Coordinator: Lydia Overbaugh

I would like to take a moment to say it has been really great being the AGSA president for the last two years. Over the last two years AGSA has had some great accomplishments thanks to the students and faculty. Accomplishments not only noticed here within the university but by other students and professors  at other universities. We consistently received positive feedback about the blog and its representation of student and faculty involvement here at UTSA during our job talks.

I just wanted to say thanks for making my job as AGSA president fun, enjoyable, and most of all rewarding.  Lets continue our support of anthropology and our academic community as we welcome our new AGSA officers.

Pete Cadena
AGSA President

Calendar update

Our first AGSA calendar has been a great success, and we’ve sold close to 40 so far!  It’s not too late to get your copy if you haven’t already done so.  We will make one last bulk order, but you will still be able to order online after that. If you would like to place an order with us, please contact our Fund-raising Coordinator, Guillaume Pages (Guillaume.Pages@utsa.edu) by February 1st.

Future Fund-raising Plans:

We are looking into making other CafePress items to help raise funds for this semester. Whatever we decide to do next, we are going to need a new logo!  Be thinking about what you would like the next great AGSA logo to look like  – this could be put on t-shirts, mugs, etc.  Details and submission deadlines to be announced.

AGSA Cookbook

AGSA is also currently accepting recipes from faculty and students for our upcoming cookbook of “Field Recipes”, perhaps better known as “101 ways to prepare rice and beans”.

If you have a dish that you would like to share, please submit the recipe, along with a brief description of where you learned about it, when/where you have had it and/or why this is a good dish when supplies or time is limited, to agsaatutsa@gmail.com.

Funds from the cookbook will be used to support AGSA events and our conference travel fund.

Workshop Series on Society, Culture & Environment

Our first session of the AGSA Workshop Series on Society, Culture & Environment will be held on September 26, 2008 at 3:15 p.m. in the Anthropology Lab.

Annica Poyas will be presenting “Pair-Bonding in Socially Monogamous Primates: A Comparative Study of the White-Faced Saki (Pithecia pithecia) and the White-Cheeked Gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys)”.

These workshops are to elicit constructive feedback from our peers, for works or presentations in progress; therefore, all faculty and graduate students in the Department of Anthropology are invited and encouraged to attend.  Annica plans to present a poster at the Texas Biological Anthropologists Consortium Conference in November, and will be sharing the results from her Master’s work for our feedback and critique.

Hope to see you all there!
